The Boy’s first joke June 22, 2009

Filed under: Food and Cooking, Funny, Lake, Sam — jtdarby @ 9:19 am

As you probably know, Sam is a funny little dude.  He’s showing signs of true wit, though.  The other day, my folks came to get him for the day, to give him something special and fun while his sis was at camp.  Which, by the way, THANK THE GODS AND GODDESSES, SHE’S HOME!!!

So Sam was chatting with Pops, my dad.  And he asked Pops, very seriously:

“Pops, what comes after 19?”

Pops answered:  “20.”

Then Sam said, “Hey, Pops – you’re pretty good at this!!!”

But that was just him being his usual funny self; he actually told me a real joke yesterday.

We went to the lake for Father’s Day, and had a fabulous time, as always.  My brother brought his kids down, and there was boat riding, and swimming off my aunt and uncle’s dock, and tubing (Sam’s first time on the tube without one of us!), and lots and lots of eating.  As usual.  Mark made a roasted vegetable puree and several slabs of ribs – one of my dad’s favorite things.  I made a broccoli slaw which was fabulous, and we made more roasted banana ice cream and toasted coconut ice cream.  Everything was delicious.  Well, I wouldn’t know about the ribs, but everyone else seemed to love them.

After we got back from our boat ride, the older kids wanted to fish off the dock, but Sam was very hot, and wanted to go up to the condo.  So I took him up, got him a cold drink, and started fixing supper.  I was flipping through the channels, trying to find something to entertain him and keep him out of the kitchen.  And then I ran across a car race on tv.  Meep.

He was completely absorbed.  He literally froze, standing in front of the tv.  I got him to sit down on that little stool, and snapped a picture.  I’m not sure he even noticed me sitting him down.  Yikes.

So I fixed his plate, and set him up on the couch with a tv tray so he could watch the race while he ate.  We talked a little bit about race cars, one of his favorite things on the planet.  And he was telling me about what he’d seen on tv during the race, and that race cars drink gas.  And then he said:

“Mommy, I want to show you a joke!”  (so cute)

“Race cars don’t eat food, and people don’t drink gas!!!!”

And then he collapsed in a fit of giggles.  And I nearly died from the cuteness.

Testing Flock 2.0 June 22, 2008

While I’m waiting for Mark and the kids to get home from the lake.  I wanted to go, but had to stay home to work.

Of course, that didn’t happen, because the people who were supposed to update me and provide new stuff to test didn’t come through.  In a stunning development . . . .

Wish I’d gone to the lake.

Super fun weekend May 26, 2008

We headed to the lake on Saturday, intending to spend one night. But we had so much fun we stayed for another. There was a picnic and silent auction at the condo complex on Saturday night, and I took chocolate peanut butter cupcakes. Yum. We rode in the boat, ate at the marina, grilled out, played at the playground, saw friends, swam in the pool, played games, and both the kids drove the boat (with some assistance from Pops, in case you’re concerned about a 7 year old and 2 year old operating a motor vehicle).

We took the dog, and she did great. The kids had a blast, and now I’m tired and a bit glad to be home. I’m being mauled by the cat, who apparently missed us.

And I’m so very glad that summer is finally arriving. This summer, I want to teach Lauren to ski. She’s ready.

So, a few weeks ago, Lauren left her mp3 player at a friend’s condo at the lake. Today was the first time that they have been there when we have, so I sent Lauren to look for it, since it had all her music on it.

She couldn’t find it, and they hadn’t seen it.

*sigh*

I personally think it simply missed our camera (which also went mysteriously missing from the lake), so it went to live in gadget heaven. Hallelujah!

In any case, I went out tonight and got L a new mp3 player and headphones.

Good thing I stored all her music online, no? Although a PITA to download it all, at least it’s not just gone.

Kiddo update July 3, 2007

My boy is so funny.  Last night at about 6:50, he asked for a glass of milk.  Actually, from him it’s more standing by the fridge, saying “Mih!  Mih!  Mih!!!!!  I got his milk for him, and he watched Mark and I play tennis on the Wii for a few minutes.  Then he said “Bye!” and headed down the hall to his room.  When he didn’t come back, we realized that was his way of saying good night – he was going to bed.  Usually he goes to bed around 7:00 or 7:15, but I guess he was tired!

My girl is with my folks this week, attending theater camp, and is loving it.  She was very nervous yesterday, but settled in nicely and loves it.  She’s just finished up the first 2 day session, and they did the play “Goodnight, Gorilla”, with “Go, Dog, Go!” coming up on Thursday and Friday.  I absolutely hated to miss her performance of the first play this morning, but we hope to take off Friday afternoon and see the second one.  She has a dramatic flair, that’s for sure, as well as a great ear for language and a very good memory.  This could develop into an interest for her – we’ll see.

I miss her more than I can say, though.  It feels entirely wrong not to have her home, even though I know she’s completely safe and having a ball being spoiled rotten.  They’re heading to the lake shortly, and we’ll be down there too for the 4th since it’s a holiday.  I can’t wait to see her!!!

Finally, an update June 18, 2007

An update was promised, so an update it shall be.

We. Did. Everything.

What? That’s not enough of an update for you? Ungrateful wretches.

We did Ripley’s, we played in the creek, we went horseback riding (twice!), we swam in the pool, we went up in the Space Needle (a bit scary), we hiked (twice!), we ate too much, we did mini-golf, we did the Jurassic Jungle Boat Ride – well actually Mark and Lauren did that but it was kind of cheesy I think, we went to the aquarium, we played at the playground, we went to the zoo, we went to Wonder Works, we rode the Sky Lift, we took the tram up to Ober Gatlinburg (where we looked at the bears, rode the pirate ship ride but I can’t find a picture/link, a water slide, and the Alpine Slide, plus ice skating), and every other single thing we could find to do in Gatlinburg.

And in honor of LL, we ate at the Pancake Pantry. Yes, that’s right. Twice.

When we got back Thursday evening, we didn’t even unpack. Mark took the kids to the lake Friday morning, and I worked on staining the concrete floor of the craft room downstairs. It’s still not done, unfortunately. If you ever decide to do this sort of a project, get the solid stain rather than the semi-transparent. Just a tip. Saturday morning, I headed to the lake myself, and we stayed there until Sunday evening.

This morning, Sam went back to day care and we went back to work. Lauren went to a new summer program starting today, and it was tough for her this morning. But she ended up having a fun day and is looking forward to going back tomorrow.

This evening, I managed to break off the top of one of my front bottom teeth, which is quite painful. And puzzling – I didn’t bite down on anything hard, it just broke off for no apparent reason. I called my dentist’s office to leave a message, hoping I can get squeezed in tomorrow. The voice mail message tells me that they are on vacation all this week! Love that timing. So tomorrow I’ll try to find another dentist to fit me in, I guess. I’m not waiting until Monday, that’s for sure. I look like a fracking hillbilly, and I talk funny too.

Today was crazy busy at work, trying to catch up. Mark is extremely happy with me, since he got a (very hard to find – I want serious points for this) Nintendo Wii for Father’s Day, plus mushy cards from me and from the kids.

So there, that’s an update.

Great weekend May 29, 2007

Filed under: Home, Kids, Lake, Lauren, Sam — jtdarby @ 11:30 am

Mark was out of town this weekend, so Saturday morning I got the kids moving and packed up the car, and we headed to the lake.  It was a big weekend at the condo complex, with a potluck to kick off the summer season and a silent auction.  There were tons of kids around, and lots of things to do.  Plus, my mom and dad were there to help with the kiddos and give me a break every once in a while.

Sam initially had a hard time sleeping/napping in his pack n’ play in an unfamiliar environment.  But he settled down pretty well through the course of the weekend.

We went for boat rides, Lauren played with her “lake friends”, we went swimming in the pool, did lots of walking, had fun playing at the playground, Lauren and I went tubing . . .

It was a great weekend.

Of course, when Mark got back and headed down to the lake on Monday, I was ready for him to take over the parenting responsibilities for a few hours!  But we had a great time.  Hope your weekend was a blast too.

Here’s one of my favorite pictures of Sam from this weekend.  I don’t have a good pic of Lauren, because of 2 things.

  1. She was in constant motion.
  2. I had my hands full with The Boy, and didn’t have much chance to snap a picture of her.

Next time!
